A North Belfast solicitor based on the Lower Antrim road.

James Hillis is a native of North Belfast, having attending St. Malachy’s College on the Antrim Road for his secondary education.

He studied Law at Queens University Belfast and graduated in 1993. He was called to the Bar in 1994, practising until June 1996, when he commenced retraining as a Solicitor.

Mr Hillis enrolled as a Solicitor in February 1996, and has worked for many of Belfast’s leading law firms including Edward’s & Co. and McCann & McCann.

During these periods he gained extensive experience in General Practice, specialising in Criminal Law and Litigation.

James has now opened his own practice on the Antrim Road as a sole practitioner specialising in Criminal Law and Personal Injury, but offering a full range of services across the board. Our aim is to provide a high level of professional expertise in all areas of law.

Police Station Representation

We can be appointed to attend police stations to advise and assist clients otherwise without legal representation.

We are sometimes appointed by the duty solicitor after they have spoken to the client. Clients can also request our services prior to attending the Police Station, or at the point of arrest

Criminal Advocacy

We advise and assist both the victims and perpetrators of General Crime, Domestic Violence, or Sexual Assault through the complexities of the criminal justice system.

General Crime is non-domestic and non-sexual in nature, with common examples such as Murder, Robbery, Identity theft, Burglary, Vandalism, Hate crimes, Assault, and Threats.

We offer representation in and across the full range of criminal courts.

Personal Injury

We advise clients who have been subject to personal injury as a result of criminal activity. Whether the injury is personal, or is criminal damage to property, we can assist clients in seeking compensation from the compensation agency.

We also act in respect of all injuries arising from road traffic accidents, accidents at work, accidents arising from falls caused by defective paving or road ways. If you have suffered injury in a privately or publicly owned building, for example, shopping centre, cinema, etc., it may also be possible to apply for compensation, and we can advise you accordingly.

If you have suffered any breech of privacy, or loss of reputation, or other loss or injury, it may be possible to apply for compensation and we will advise you accordingly.

Road Traffic Accidents

We advise clients following involvement in a Road Traffic accident. We write to all party’s responsible, obtain police and medical reports (where necessary) to ensure the complete detail of any injuries suffered.

We then negotiate with the responsible party’ insurance company to ensure a fair settlement.

Wills and Probate

Every adult should make a Will and review it regularly, particularly if their circumstances change, such as they get married, have children or get divorced. (In fact it is important to note that marriage invalidates any Will made before marriage).

The main reason is so that you can decide who should benefit (the beneficiaries) after your death. If you fail to make a will you are said to have died intestate. Under this country’s intestacy rules the people to whom you would like to leave your estate may receive little, or nothing at all, and others may benefit whom you did not wish to do so.

The second reason is to avoid Inheritance Tax. Inheritance Tax may be payable by your estate on assets over £300,000 (as of 6 April 2007).

If you have children then it is possible to appoint guardians who will be responsible for your children’s upbringing if neither parent is alive, and you can appoint someone you trust to look after your assets until the children become old enough to take responsibility for themselves (your trustees).

  • Making a Will won’t kill you and we all die sometime.
  • If you are old enough to drink and vote then you should be responsible enough to make a Will.
  • The actual process of drawing up the Will is really very straightforward these days, particularly with the aid of computers.
  • There are three basic alternatives if you decide to go ahead.
  • Whilst it is possible to write your own will, we can provide you with the best guidance in completing your will. We can also store your Will for you.
